Resumo: The study of the life and work of Teófi lo Braga allows us to conclude that his thought and action shaped some of the most decisive intellectual movements and political events in the 19th and 20th centuries in Portugal. In the fi eld of literature, he contributed, with Antero de Quental, towards the renovation of aesthetic canons through his involvement in the so-called “Coimbra Question”. In the fi eld of philosophy, he introduced Positivism in Portugal. In politics, he was the leader of the federalist wing of Portuguese Republicanism.; A abordagem à vida e obra de Teófi lo Braga permite concluir que o seu pensamento e acção marcaram alguns dos mais decisivos momentos intelectuais e políticos que foram vividos em Portugal nos séculos XIX e XX. No plano literário, contribuiu, com Antero de Quental, para a renovação dos respectivos cânones estéticos, travando a polémica da “Questão Coimbrã”. No plano fi losófi co, foi o introdutor do positivismo em Portugal. No plano político, chefi ou a ala federalista do republicanismo português.
