- Resumo
- The Republican intelligentsia played a leading role in promoting Portuguese involvement in the Great War. The conscious assumption of a social mission was evident in different literary projects with which intellectuals sought to raise the nation’s awareness and at the same time legitimize the interventionist policy of the Republic. According to their rhetoric, the war offered a new means for collective resurgence, a fact that explains the importance of the idealist features of their patriotic discourse, which aimed at strengthening national cohesion without, however, overlooking the need to reinforce the political and ideological legacy of modernity, which was seen as a civilizational achievement.
- O escol intelectual republicano assumiu grande protagonismo na propaganda a favor da beligerância portuguesa durante a Grande Guerra. A assunção consciente de uma missão social tornou-se evidente em diferentes projectos literários com que procurou mobilizar a consciência nacional e ao mesmo tempo legitimar a política intervencionista da república. A sua retórica vislumbrou no confl ito uma nova via de ressurgimento colectivo, facto que explica a importância da componente idealista do seu discurso patriótico, com o qual almejava reforçar a coesão nacional. Mas que não perdia de vista a necessidade de reforçar o património político e ideológico da modernidade entendido como conquista civilizacional.
