This text discusses the political ideas of the 15th century in
Portugal, focusing particularly on the thought of Prince Pedro, the
author of the Tratado da Virtuosa Benfeitoria [Treatise on Virtuous
Works]. It emphasizes and contextualizes the emergence of the concepts
of “republic” and “common good” both in the work of this statesman
and in the cultural, literary and legal tradition of the fi rst generations
of the Court of Avis.
Este texto propõe-se refl ectir sobre o ideário político do
Quattrocento português, com especial incidência no pensamento de
D. Pedro, o autor do “Tratado da Virtuosa Benfeitoria”, sublinhando
e contextualizando a emergência dos conceitos “república” e de “bem
comum” quer na obra deste homem de Estado, quer na tradição cultural
literária e jurídica das primeiras gerações da Corte de Avis.
