Resumo: The aim of this essay is to reflect on the averred crisis in the Humanities, which stems from the widespread financial crisis but also from the panoply of epistemological anxieties and doubts that have cropped up in discussion of the value and role of the Humanities in the contemporary world. The Humanities, which have been for a long time inherently interdisciplinary, are now looking for productive synergies with scientific areas that might help to shed light on and expand their field of enquiry. Amongst the most promising are the neurosciences and cognitive sciences, evolutionary criticism, the biological sciences and digital humanities. Drawing on this wealth of resources does not mean a dwindling in the value of Humanities as a mode of intervention and interpretative tool. On the contrary, it will immeasurably enhance their explanatory power, so that the Humanities, together with the sciences, will move towards a more thorough understanding of the human being in the universe.; Este ensaio pretende reflectir sobre a alegada crise nas Humanidades e algumas das suas mais importantes manifestações, traduzidas no que se pode apelidar de crise de crescimento, assim como algumas das soluções apontadas, que passam especificamente por alargar as bases epistemológicas e hermenêuticas das disciplinas humanísticas tradicionais a um amplo leque de propostas e metodologias das ciências. Entre estas incluem-se as neurociências, as ciências cognitivas, teorias evolucionistas, a biologia e as humanidades digitais como algumas das áreas potencialmente mais produtivas. Estas novas sinergias são, no entanto, por vezes fonte de críticas por parte de alguns intelectuais das Humanidades. Estas, por seu turno, sempre se pautaram por uma intensa interdisciplinaridade, embora geralmente com áreas afins. A aproximação às Ciências, quando efectuada de forma criteriosa, trará seguramente benefícios consideráveis sem diluir ou menorizar o valor das Humanidades, que continuarão a ter um papel central e complementar na explicação e entendimento do ser humano e do seu lugar no universo.
