Resumo: The exponential growth in scientifi c production, in the mid-twentieth century, and respective periodicals’ publishing, in conjunction with the new technologies’ emergence, from which we highlight the digital media as the most important source of dissemination and access to information, have made the abstract an excellent way to spread brief, extensive and updated information. With this article we intend to better analyze the etymology and the semantic evolution of the terms summary and abstract, over time, in order to understand the dynamics of this instrument of information representation, when viewed in the context of documentation representation. To fulfi ll this purpose we carried out a comparative study between these two words, with preference being given, for this matter, to etymological dictionaries from different eras. This linguistic analysis, that focused on the study of semantic and etymological evolution of the words considered, allows us to conclude, among other things, that the features observed in linguistic sense are identical to those observed within the words’ meaning and, currently, as in the past, there is a semantic identifi cation between abstract and summary.; O aumento exponencial da produção científi ca e respetivas revistas, a partir de meados do século XX, associado à emergência das novas tecnologias, das quais referimos os suportes digitais como meios privilegiados da difusão e acesso à informação, fazem do resumo um meio de excelência para a divulgação, breve, substancial e atualizada, deste tipo de literatura. Pretende-se, com este artigo, dar a conhecer a etimologia e a evolução semântica das palavras ‘resumo’ e ‘abstract’ ao longo dos tempos, de forma a compreender a dinâmica deste instrumento de representação e divulgação da informação, quando perspetivado no âmbito documental. Para dar cumprimento a tal propósito realizou-se uma análise comparativa entre estas duas palavras, privilegiando- -se, para o efeito, dicionários etimológicos de diferentes épocas. Esta análise linguística, que se debruçou sobre o estudo da evolução etimológica e semântica das palavras consideradas, permite-nos concluir, entre outros pontos, que as características observadas na aceção linguística dos termos são idênticas às observadas na aceção documental e, que actualmente, tal como em tempos idos, se verifi ca uma proximidade semântica entre a palavra ‘resumo’ e ‘abstract’, apesar de estas resultarem de étimos diferentes.
