This text focuses on the artwork Potlatch made in 1976 by the Portuguese
artist Leonel Moura (Lisbon, 1948), and aims to analyze it in its various dimensions.
Firstly, the author considers the use of the photographic medium in this
series of twenty pictures in black and white, an artistic election of libertarian
gesture in vogue with the international trends of research and experimentation
of new operating fi elds, conceptual nature, and questioning of the prevailing
artistic paradigm. Following this is a formal and interpretative analysis of the
set, particularly taking into account its sequential and narrative character as
well as the staging of the artist’s suicide, evocative of certain photographic
artifi ces, theoretical and critical postures on the death of the author and the end of art assumptions. In conclusion it is considered the ideological and political
dimension of the artwork, its relationship with the Letterist International, given
that Leonel Moura borrows the word potlatch from the letterist bulletin, and
the Situationism of Guy Debord.
do paradigma artístico vigente.
narrativo e à encenação do suicídio do artista, convocando, naturalmente, certos
